Tom Mahoney, retired Fairmont High School football coach, was honored at half-time during Fairmont's Friday night football game, September 14, 2007, when it was announced that an endowed scholarship was funded in his name. A group of former Fairmont High School letter winners established an endowed scholarship in Tom's name by contributing $10,000 to the Fairmont Dollars for Scholars Chapter. The first Tom Mahoney scholarship will be awarded to a Fairmont High School graduate at the chapter's annual Awards Night in May 2008.
This group of Fairmont graduates funding this scholarship wanted to honor Tom for not only being a coach who developed quality teams, but a coach who cared about his players.
Tom, a University of Minnesota, Minneapolis graduate, and his wife, Pat and family moved to Fairmont in 1956 to coach and teach in the Fairmont High School. He continued to coached football until his retirement from education in 1990. During that time his team won 31 games in a row and when he retired he had more wins (256-94-8) than any high school football coach in Minnesota. Throughout the years Tom was active in a number of state coaching organizations and officiated in many high school and college football and basketball games.
